ATSC 3.0 – NextGen TV

On June 13 th , 2009, television in the United States ceased transmitting over-the-air television signals in analog format to comply with a mandate from the FCC titled ATSC 1.0. This change saw all transmissions to be broadcast digitally to allow for better picture and sound, and now 13 years later the latest update, ATSC 3.0 is in full swing. The benefits to the consumer are numerous, while ATSC 1.0 tops out at 1080i, 3.0 brings full 4k picture and sound to the table with the ability of adapting to different video formats which could bring broadcasts in 8k. The service won’t be limited to just televisions and is being designed to work with smart phones,  mobile devices and even vehicles. I agree that being able to watch your local news during your morning commute seems a little silly as an added benefit, but there is talk that this technology could be used as a back up for GPS and even driverless vehicle automation. It’s still early on in development but these are excitin...

Alexa Together; how reliable internet can give you peace of mind

Alexa is Amazons personal assistant found in a variety of products in their Echo line, these devices connect to the internet and allow the owner to set reminders, provide weather forecasts and listen to their favorite music amongst other things. Today we’re highlighting a relatively new feature called Alexa Together which is aimed at providing around the clock monitoring and support to your loved ones. Alexa Together is a subscription-based service at $19.99 a month that is currently free for the first six months with the ability to cancel anytime. All you need to get started is at least one Echo device in the home of the person receiving support while you, the supporting family member, will only need to have the Alexa app installed on your mobile device, although on their official page Amazon does recommend that two Echo devices will give the optimal experience. Each party will also need their own Amazon account which is free to set up. Some highlights to what Alexa Together...

Life360: Safety for the entire family

It’s official, summer vacation is over for our household, our three children started school last Monday with an as to be expected lukewarm reception. As they’re growing older, they’re all starting to assert more independence, wanting to walk and bike to school by themselves, hanging out with friends after school, not to mention any extra circular activities such as band or afterschool clubs that have them away from home. This year we’re trying out an app that lets them have their freedom while also giving Mom and Dad a little bit of breathing room, never having to worry about what happened if someone comes home a little later than normal (and forgets to call).  Life360 was conceived in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 with the goal to help families have peace and mind about where their immediate family members are. Today the app is used in 195 countries around the world. The application works on a variety of smart phones and smart home products such as the Amazon E...

4K Streaming in an Affordable Package

Readers note this is a strictly non-technical review, as those can be found elsewhere . There are quite a few options to choose from when you decide to cut the cord, and a lesser-known option is the Onn Android TV box which I've been testing for just over a month now.   The Onn box is deceptively tiny in both performance and cost. Priced at $20, this box sure packs a punch. Set up took less than 10 minutes, all I had to do was connect to my Wi-Fi, put in my google account information, and tell the box what apps to start downloading. After these steps it asked me to set up the Bluetooth voice remote, once again this was a breeze and it automatically programmed itself to my TV allowing me to control the sets power and volume. The home screen is your familiar assortment of application logos with all the major players here. Disney Plus, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max the list goes on and on, what sets this box apart from the rest is that you can also access the ...
