Life360: Safety for the entire family

It’s official, summer vacation is over for our household, our three children started school last Monday with an as to be expected lukewarm reception. As they’re growing older, they’re all starting to assert more independence, wanting to walk and bike to school by themselves, hanging out with friends after school, not to mention any extra circular activities such as band or afterschool clubs that have them away from home. This year we’re trying out an app that lets them have their freedom while also giving Mom and Dad a little bit of breathing room, never having to worry about what happened if someone comes home a little later than normal (and forgets to call).

Life360 was conceived in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 with the goal to help families have peace and mind about where their immediate family members are. Today the app is used in 195 countries around the world. The application works on a variety of smart phones and smart home products such as the Amazon Echo. The basic app is free, but they do offer a monthly and yearly subscription plan, each building on its list safety features. In Life360s free plan (what we’re using now) it allows one user to create an administrator account and invite subsequent family members to join. From here the admin can pull up the application which will display a map and GPS location of each of their family members. The free version logs 2 days of location history and allows you to set up 2 unlimited location alerts, such as home or school. This automatically alerts the party has arrived at such location. The free version also boasts data breach alerts, crash detection, and an SOS Help Alert that allows users to send a silent, immediate alert with their location to their family members and emergency contacts.

As the kids get older, I can see taking advantage of some of the premium pay features, such as roadside assistance, free towing, emergency dispatch and even stolen phone protection, but for right now this works great as a tool parents can use to keep their children and loved ones safe.

Here are some techniques and tools you can use so you don’t get fooled again.
