Readers
note this is a strictly non-technical review, as those can be found elsewhere.
There
are quite a few options to choose from when you decide to cut the cord, and a
lesser-known option is the Onn Android TV box which I've been testing for just
over a month now.
The
Onn box is deceptively tiny in both performance and cost. Priced at $20, this
box sure packs a punch. Set up took less than 10 minutes, all I had to do was
connect to my Wi-Fi, put in my google account information, and tell the box
what apps to start downloading. After these steps it asked me to set up the
Bluetooth voice remote, once again this was a breeze and it automatically
programmed itself to my TV allowing me to control the sets power and volume.
The
home screen is your familiar assortment of application logos with all the major
players here. Disney Plus, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max the list
goes on and on, what sets this box apart from the rest is that you can also
access the google play store and choose from a plethora of apps and games.
The remote is responsive and snappy, and the completely optional voice feature
makes finding movies and shows fast and easy. Also responsive is the box
itself, with apps usually only taking a few seconds if that to load.
This
weekend I was able to play around with the Bluetooth controller options and
Stadia which worked flawlessly, for those who don't know Stadia is a cloud
based gaming service owned by Amazon which allows users to subscribe ($9.99 a month)
and play from a selection of hundreds of video game titles.
Pros: Cons:
⦁ Affordable
• Must have
google account
⦁ Easy set up
• Smaller internal memory
⦁ Large selection of Apps
If you're in the market for a great alternative to Roku or Fire Stick TV I highly recommend the Onn Android TV. As always if you need help with anything streaming or smart home related you can contact us at 309-778-8611 or by emailing us at OneSource@midcentury.com
