People buy expensive cases for their phones and tablets, but an often looked but essential component is the device charger itself. Often times people will lay them out haphazardly across a desktop or floor, and then throw them in a bag during travel, only to find when they go to charge the device later, the charger no longer works. Here are some usual tips on proper care.
1. Use only the cord that came with the device and only buy compatible replacements.
Pay close attention to the cord specifications when buying a new charger or cord, just because they look similar doesn't mean that they are, not only could this not charge the device you purchased it for but may cause some pretty serious damage to the device itself.
2. Stay cool and stay dry.
Intense temperatures, both hot and cold can ruin your charger, leaving them bake in the sun or freeze overnight are not recommended. Neither is getting them wet, as moisture can cause shorts inside.
3. Don't yank on that cord.
Gently unplug it using only the head of the charger, this will help reduce the chance of a cord breaking on the inside.
4. Don't charge your device during a thunderstorm.
This advice goes for all electronics and may seem like common sense, but we all know that if electricity strikes a pole nearby it can travel and damage your electrical socket and any device attached to it.
5. Use surge protectors.
Many are unaware that the electricity from your outlet can fluctuates. Using surge protectors is a great way to protect against electrical fluctuations and surges.
6. Wrap the charger correctly.
Try to wrap the charge cord in the same manner you first unwrapped it when it was new. Wrapping them haphazardly in a ball or ununiformly can cause breakage in the wire.
7. Beware of pets.
Cats, dogs, rodents, can all find and chew on cords, being mindful of where they are and putting up the cords when not in use can minimize the risk that our pets make a snack out of our chargers.
