Netflix has a secret

How many times have you opened Netflix in hopes to find a movie or start a new series only to be unimpressed with what the algorithm has decided to offer and end up re-watching the same shows again? Did you know that Netflix has a list of secret codes that you can use to help find exactly what you’re in the mood to watch?

Netflix has a list of category codes that trace their roots all the way back to 1997 when the company first launched as a physical DVD-only rental service. One fan managed to scrape all these codes from their website and share them online. Since then, Netflix has added thousands more codes, seemingly randomly at times, while others like the Human Connections (81271205) were creating during the COVID-19 pandemic to give customers some “feel good” titles.

Unfortunately, the only way to access these codes is by using a web browser, as of this date Netflix has no plans on adding code search functionality to its smart device apps. Simply copy and paste “netflix.com/browse/genre/” and add the code at the end of the link. For example, if you were looking for a family friendly movie to put on during a Thanksgiving get together, you’d type in “netflix.com/browse/genre/51056” which will bring up the “Family Features” category. Alternatively, you can type in the code on Netflix’s built-in search to the same effect. Keep in mind that Netflix content is different depending on what region of the world you are in, and some may not be compatible.
