What is a Smart home and what can it do for you?

What is a smart home?  This seemingly simple question can be answered several different ways depending on who you ask, but for the sake of this article I will answer in the most basic way I know how.  A smart home is a residence that is equipped with several devices that automate everyday tasks by using voice commands or artificial intelligence.

For some homeowners, turning a home into a smart home could be as simple as adding a voice assistant, like Google assistant or Amazon’s Alexa.  For others it could be linking together several devices such as security systems, cameras, computers, phones, appliances, TV’s, and more.

So, a smart home sounds cool and all, but why should you even consider one?  Well in this article I will go over my top 3 reason you should consider making your home SMART.

Saving Energy and Money

Who doesn’t want to pay less on their electric bill! With smart thermostats you can quickly and precisely automate the heating and cooling of a home usually resulting in a lower electric bill at the end of the month.  With other devices like smart lights and appliances you can use less energy by powering them down while they’re not in use adding to the savings.

Security and Safety

Smart home security is really a thing of beauty. Cameras, lights, doorbells, and locks all working seamlessly to protect your home.  Making your home connected allows you to keep an eye on it from anywhere with just your smart phone.  For instance, when your kids come home from school you can check in on them with your smart camera and even communicate with them with two-way audio in the cameras. Even better, your kids are home alone and the doorbells rings.  Instead of the kids going to answer to see who it is, you can check the doorbell camera to make sure it’s safe.  Yes, we are living in the future!

Entertainment

Smart homes are great for entertaining.  Connecting speakers, TV’s, lights and much more to voice assistants, so that you can control your whole home by simply speaking.  Hosting a party and want music to play all through out the house?  Just set up some connected speakers and ask your voice assistant to play your favorite playlist.  Want to turn on the big game?  Ask your voice assistant to turn it on.  Gone are the days of having to run around ragged to get things done. Simply ask your favorite voice assistant to do it for you.

Smart homes can change our lives. Automating some of our day to day duties allows us to spend more of our time doing the things we love; with the people we love.  If you liked this blog, we post one every month, so stayed tuned to catch the next one and if you can’t wait, follow us on Facebook at MidCentury.OneSource where we post the latest smart home and streaming news.

Why are there flags in my yard?

One day you may be surprised to come home to colorful flags in your yard or even the grass spray painted. You don't remember calling 811, so what could this mean? More than likely one of your neighbors has called and requested JULIE ( Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators.) , or a utility company is doing repairs and maintenance. That's right, even though the work may not be for your property, responsible do-it-yourselfers and companies want to make sure that no underground asset gets hit when the work gets underway on the properties next door. So, don't be alarmed if a locator shows up to your home one day to let you know that they'll be marking your yard. The alternative could add up to costly repairs or even injuries.  What is 811?
